On Friday, Moore High School senior and volleyball standout Kristen Straughn was honored with a $5,000 award through a partnership with She's in the Game and Chevy dealers in Oklahoma.

The award honors Straughn and will be used for women's sports programs at Moore High School. She's in the Game representative Jeannie Kirk made the presentation before members of the Moore Public Schools and MHS administration, the volleyball team, and Straughn's coaches.

Straughn holds a 4.44 GPA and also plays soccer during spring sports. She's played club volleyball for 10 years, spending time at OK Premier, OK Charge and most recently, Rise. She's played soccer for 13 years, 12 of them with Oklahoma Celtic.

I am honored to continue my journey of faith with the Lord as He guides me through a new chapter of life. I plan to attend Mid-America Christian University to play volleyball and pursue a degree in biology.

 - Kristen Straughn

She was offered athletic and academic scholarships for college after graduation this May. She also plans to pursue optometry school to become an eye doctor.

Straughn said, "Young women should try out for sports, even if they haven’t played before. Sports teach us life-long lessons, skills and they help us grow deep friendships. With hard work, dedication, and a love for the game, the potential of an amazing athlete can become reality.

"I thank the Lord for gifting me the ability to do what I love and for the incredible people He has blessed me with through sports. I also thank my parents for being my number one supporters and for all the long drives to games and tournaments, hours at convention centers, soccer fields, and track meets. They always see the best in me and push me to be the best I can be."

She said her sisters were instrumental in her development by always playing with and challenging her. She also expressed gratitude to all of her teammates for bringing her joy, encouragement and shaping her into who she is today. Lastly, Straughn thanked her coaches at Moore High School, Oklahoma Celtic, OK Premier, OK Charge and her future coaches at Rise and Mid-America Christian University.
